I’m starting a new series because, well, people are basically amazing. I meet some phenomenal people all the time and now that I have this platform I’ve decided to start featuring them here. The people I will feature do not have to necessarily be content producers in the personal finance space. They just have to be amazing which is, of course, subject to my interpretation. 😉
Learning New Things
I’m not going to do much writing in this post because I want the focus to be on Rosemary. She was most comfortable sharing her & her husband’s (John) story in video format rather than writing. Additionally, I got to teach myself some new things in the process. I did what most of the world does and watched YouTube to learn a new skill. In this case, I used YouTube to learn how to create my YouTube channel and upload a video.
Um, and if you are curious it was incredibly easy. Here is the link to the instructional video I found most helpful…and here is the link to my new YouTube channel if you want to subscribe. Who knows maybe I’ll even create some of my own videos in the future. Woah!!
Today’s story can pretty much be summed up in one word – generosity. At the very least, I need to share the story of how Rosemary & I met. I wrote the following post in the ChooseFI FaceBook group on May 30, 2018.
As you can see it was shortly after I moved into my apartment and I was discouraged because my bike was stolen. I received some very useful advice in the comments that ranged from filing a claim (or rather not to) with my insurance company to preventing bike theft in the future. People were kind and encouraging.
Rosemary left a comment telling me she sent me a direct message. When I opened her message I started to cry.
Rosemary’s message explained that she and her husband allocate part of their paycheck for giving and they wanted to help me out in getting a new bike. Whaaat?!? Who does that? I’ll tell you who does that – amazing people.
Hope Restored in Humanity
I went back and forth on whether or not I should accept their generosity. In haste, I filled a police report the night I discovered it was stolen and then called my renter’s insurance. With some hindsight, it may not have been the smartest thing to do but alas it’s what I did.
As I dug deeper with the insurance company, I was approved to get a decent settlement for my high-quality bike. If I withdrew the claim, it would still ding my policy since it had been filed so I ultimately accepted it.
That being said, I obviously did not accept the financial help from Rosemary & John also. However, their kind and sincere gesture restored my hope in humanity and a new friendship was born!
What makes this so remarkable is that Rosemary & John were still in debt when they made this offer. Actually, you’ll get to hear Rosemary talk about coming to the end of their debt pay off journey in this video. Be sure to congratulate them in the comments!!
While I was paying off my debt, I chose to tithe to my local church. It hurt and, at first, I did it solely out of obedience to God. However, what I received, as a result, was so much greater. I became a disciplined person with my finances – something that was a mystery most of my previous life.
People are Basically Amazing
So I’m standing by the statement that people are basically amazing. Without further ado, I’d like to introduce you to Rosemary & John Fotheringham and their story…
Do you agree – that people are basically amazing? I just love how Rosemary describes her belief that they were able to get out of debt because they continued to give. They made the conscious choice to bless others while they were still digging their way out of debt. Rosemary essentially talks about the prosperity mindset that this habit fosters.
Furthermore, she goes onto describe some fundamental things about giving:
- It’s a heart issue
- You cannot give with the expectation of getting back
There is a lesson here for me too and that is to find joy in giving, not just obedience. 🙂
Please take the time to congratulate them on their debt freedom & intentional lifestyle choices in the comments below!!
I’m so excited to bring this new series to my readers as I have some extraordinary people to share with you. If you have a story to share in this series, I’d love to have you pitch me on it. Please contact me and we’ll talk..until then stay A M A Z I N G !!
