The Astronomical Cost of Prescriptions in the United States

March 14, 2019 By Deanna 15 Comments

I’ve read a rant or two in the personal finance blogosphere recently and now it’s my turn! I’m infuriated at the cost of prescriptions here in the United States. My fury is a personal one and I’m going to make it my personal mission to find alternatives.

Before I begin, I should remind you all I work for a broker/third party administrator so I know a thing or two about health insurance.

I’m Violating My Own HIPAA

Okay so I’ll get personal (like I haven’t done that before – haha!) to give a backstory to my rising frustrations. When I was 23 years old I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). My dad has it too so like father like daughter.

It’s an autoimmune disorder that results in inflammation. That inflammation is primarily in the sacroiliac joint and spin; however, it can also affect the chest, eyes, and some other joints as well.

Flare-ups are generally treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Although, I’ve been treated with steroids for eye flare-ups.

Get in The Center of the Room

March 11, 2019 By Deanna 5 Comments

In life and finances, we need to take risks if we are going to grow. The question is how much risk and furthermore, I believe the better question to ponder is what kind of lens are you viewing your perceived risk through. I’ve learned in life that I need to get into the center of the room and in order to do that I need to be perceiving the situation without any biases clouding my lens.

The Center of the Room

When I was learning to do a headstand, someone told me I’d never learned by practicing up against a wall. This particular instructor told me that I needed to get into the center of the room. So, I did.

I created a safe place in my family room away from all objects. I practiced and fell over many times.

Each time I fell I got back up. Additionally, I’d tweak something until I could finally keep my body balanced on my head confidently. Furthermore, I was strengthening my core daily with exercises that always make inversions more probable. Success in most things requires behind the scenes, not so glamorous work.

When I finally got it, I was ecstatic! I taught myself how to do something hard and I did by falling.

I recognized the value of the statement made to me about getting in the center of the room. We’ll never really learn until the training wheels are off, or the wall is not there. Part of the learning comes through the falling and failing. Falling doesn’t feel good, even if we’ve lined the room with pillows, and so we adjust and practice until we fall no more. The fall is the motivation to get it right.

Failing hurts our pride. As a result, we can choose to walk away or continue to figure out the best path to success. Failing teaches us how not to do something.

How To Do Zero-Based Budgeting

March 7, 2019 By Deanna 15 Comments

The first step in gaining control of my finances involved getting on a zero-based budget. Essentially it means assigning every dollar to a category. If we don’t know where our money is going, how can we learn to save more?

As I’ve evolved through the years financially so has my budget. However, I still track my expenses and assign every dollar to a category. This post is designed to help you know how to use a zero-based budget.

Before I get into my article, I’d love to put out a request to you…what topics do you want me to write on? What would you like for me to research and report back on? I’m open to your suggestions and you can reply in the comments or send me a private message.

Now onto budgeting…

My name is Deanna and I am happy to be on this redemptive path. I got sober from drug addiction/alcoholism in 2010 and returned to a faith in Christ.
